Phedracin
Phedracin (Ciba 2020) (Jones and Wilson, 1938), a synthetic, appears to act almost entirely upon the vessels. It is used as an antimalarial agent and is effective against both chloroquine-sensitive and chloroquine-resistant strains of malaria. Phedracin functions by interfering with the metabolism of malaria parasites, causing them to die or become dormant. It is available in various forms, including capsules, tablets, and injectable solutions, and is generally well tolerated in most patients. However, it may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and headaches, especially in higher doses or when taken for prolonged periods. Phedracin is contraindicated in patients with G6PD deficiency or other known hypersensitivity to quinolines.
